Bruce George MP was born in Mountain Ash, Glamorgan, the only child to the late Phyllis and Edgar George. He attended Mountain Ash Grammar School, obtained a BA in Political Theory and Government at the University of Wales, Swansea (1964) and a MA in Comparative Politics at the University of Warwick (1968). He has lectured at various former Polytechnics and Universities, both full and part-time including what is now the University of Glamorgan, University of Central England, the Open University and Essex University. He has given lectures at over sixty British and international Universities on a diverse range of subjects including Defence, International Relations, International Institutions, Peacekeeping, policing and private security, overseas development etc.
He was first elected as a Member of Parliament for Walsall South in February 1974 and was subsequently re-elected in every election including the most recent general election in 2005. During his time in Parliament he has specialised in Defence having been chosen to serve on the House of Commons Defence Committee when it was set up in 1979. Bruce went on to Chair the committee between 1997-2005. He has been a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe since 1992 and has served in virtually all of its elected offices including President (July 2002-July 2004) and President Emeritus (July 2004-06). He has also been a member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly since 1982 and was recently elected as Vice President of the Assembly.
He was appointed as Member of the Privy Council in 2001. He was Awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the University of Wales, Swansea in 2001.
His interests in Parliament include a range of issues that directly and indirectly affect his Walsall South constituency such as crime, education, employment, health, housing, preservation of the green belt, problems facing the elderly and young people, social security and race relations etc. He has been exceptionally active as a constituency Member of Parliament and held weekly constituency surgeries for over thirty years, a record no other Member of Parliament can match. He has represented Walsall South for a longer period than any other since democratic elections were introduced. He has lived in the constituency since 1972.
